# API keys

> Create a team API key for the SDK and REST API

The SDK and REST API sign in with a team API key. The hosted MCP server does not need one: you sign in with your Kadoa account instead. Only the local stdio MCP server reads a key, from `KADOA_API_KEY`.

## Create a key

Go to **Settings > General** and generate the key. Only Admins and Owners can do this. Send the key in the `x-api-key` header, or pass it to the SDK client.

## How keys work

* Keys start with `tk-` and belong to the team, not to a person.
* Actions made with a key appear under the team's service account, not under a member. The service account is listed with your members.
* Destinations and scripts that use a key keep working when members leave or change roles.
* The [Activity log](https://www.kadoa.com/activity-log) shows which actions were automated and which were manual.

Store keys in a secret manager. Never paste a key into a prompt or a chat.
